More and more, Akron Public Schools (APS) is seeing organizations and companies around our community making contributions of time, talent and resources to our students.

Recently, our friends at the Buckeye State Credit Union (BSCU) made a gift of $10,000 to Seiberling CLC (elementary) in east Akron.

Buckeye’s Community Development & Support Manager, Terrence Davis, tells us that for someone who might not know much about BSCU, it isn’t just another banking option for the communities it serves.

“We are educators," Davis said. “So, when it was time for us to make a decision on who we can show support to in our community, APS was a lay-up.” Davis added, “As a former APS parent and former PTA president for multiple years, I personally know the challenges the public school system faces when it comes to educating our youth. I wish I could have added a few more zeros! It is our goal to “Help People Build Financial Security."

APS Superintendent David W. James, Ed.D., has seen how donations and contributions of all sorts of resources affect the lives of students. “One person making a difference for another is contagious.” James said. “We are grateful for Buckeye State CU’s generosity with our children.”

Davis talked about the importance of financial literacy, saying “If we are to live our purpose, we must elevate people in our communities to a place where they can achieve and maintain financial security — and we can do that by partnering with organizations like APS, that help people access those basic needs and build skills to create stability.”

As for how Seiberling will put this donation to good use, Principal Regina Llewellyn says they plan to employ this “generous donation” to help with many important causes. “We intend to use it for supporting: MD (multiple disability student) classrooms; more items to help facilitate seamless interventions in the classrooms; sensory room enhancements; the Soap Box Derby; literacy initiatives, and our Seiberling PTA.”

Llewellyn says these are all areas Davis and BSCU have been working on improving with Seiberling staff. “We’ve been collaborating on these causes since early in the school year when we first spoke of this partnership,” the principal said.

Terrence Davis added, “Being a not-for-profit credit union, with a low-income designation and the only Community Development Financial Institution in Akron, we get great joy as an organization in giving back to our community. We have an intentional social responsibility with an even deeper purpose. Our purpose is to help people achieve financial security. But without access to the basics like food, affordable housing and educational opportunities, people can’t feel financially secure.”
